It’s five minutes to midnight and scientists are leaving no coral unturned to save the reef.
Coral reefs contribute considerably to Earth’s biodiversity, harbouring 25 percent of all marine life. Beyond their breathtaking natural beauty, reefs also maintain ocean health and protect the shore from the sea.
Australia’s own jewelled wonder, the Great Barrier Reef is an integral part of the global reef system, contributes over 6 billion dollars annually to the economy and is deeply embedded in the Australian psyche. Sadly, the reef is facing several ongoing threats, with climate change at the top of the list. Back-to-back bleaching events in the past two years due to ocean warming have damaged significant areas and action on all fronts is needed now, more than ever.
Join our panel of experts to explore the state of these fragile ecosystems and how Australian and international science and innovation aims to mitigate further damage.
